Former governor of Benue State, Mr. Gabriel Suswam, has been arrested by Department of State Service, DSS, over an alleged connection with the killings in the state.
According to IPN Sources in the DSS, Suswam was invited by the Security Agency on Tuesday over a petition by a high ranking politician, with the allegation that Suswam was the sponsor of Mr. Terwase Akwaza, a.k.a ‘Ghana’. Police had declared Akwaza wanted, following the killing of about 17 people in Zaki Biam, Benue State, in March last year. He had also been alleged to be part of those behind incessant killings in many Benue villages.
It was disclosed to IPN that DSS had placed Suswam on close surveillance since it received the Petition from the politician and that he was only invited to answer some queries that arose as a result of the measure. Suswam’s lawyer Joseph Daudu was however not allowed to see him yesterday.
It should be recalled that the DSS, had arrested Suswam in February last year on the allegation that arms and ammunition and other incriminating items were recovered in some exotic cars in a complex which it claimed belonged to the former governor. He spent two months in the custody of the DSS.
It is being speculated that Suswam’s arrest is not unconnected with the perceived view that he has a lock on the Senatorial seat of Benue’s Zone A and therefore poses a threat to the second term ambition of Governor Ortom in that area. The prevailing notion among APC apparachik is that for the party to do well, Suswam has to be done away with. Whether this tactics or strategy would work is yet to be seen.
