Revealed! The Position Of The National Secretariat Of Mdzough U Tiv On Lagos State Chapter

Mdzough U Tiv National Secretariat’s attention has been drawn to the malicious and defamatory stories by some members of the Tiv community in Lagos against the National Secretariat and in particular against our able President General, Chief Engr. Edward Iyorshaa Ujege, FNSE, MFR, (Zege Mule U Konshisha).

The insults are particularly emanating from Undu Joseph Saater, Amadu Mathias and Aondowase Kajo. The major point they make is that the National Secretariat is running a faction of Mdzough U Tiv in Lagos.

We want to disabuse the minds of the public and especially the Tiv nation that the National Secretariat is not equivalent to a chapter President and cannot, therefore, run a faction. The issue of these disgusted individuals started well before Kajo nominated himself the branch President against the constitutional provisions of Mdzough U Tiv. The Constitutional provisions is “Ya Na Angbian”. See Article 10 (3) which states that, for the purpose of securing love, peace and harmony, and the spirit of brotherhood among members of the Association offices established under the provisions of Article 5 of this constitution shall rotate among members in such a manner as to ensure compliance with the principle of “Ya Na Angbian”.

This is the crux of the matter,

On the 4th of November, 2014, Engr. E.I.T. Ujege led elected Committee came into power after series of caretaker bodies.

On the 30th of May, 2016, the first petition from the Lagos chapter of Mdzough u Tiv reached the National Secretariat, Gboko against the then President of Lagos chapter, Mr. Kyaator stating among others that he was transferred to Abuja three years earlier but he had refused to handover, instead he continue to dictate from there. They alleged that his tenure was over and a new executive should have been elected.

On the 18th June, 2016, the National Committee went to Lagos and held a meeting with all stakeholders to resolve the crisis. The substance of their petition was confirmed to be true. But since Mr. Kyaator agreed to handover in October, 2016, in just three months interval, we advised all parties to suspend their grievances. Thereafter a six point resolutions were arrived at. They were written and distributed.

On the 27th of August, 2016, another petition came from the Lagos chapter that Mr. Kyaator had flouted all the resolutions made at the meeting presided over by the National Committee. That he refused to lift the suspension of Ter-Lagos which the resolution asked him to do among other issues.

On the 30th August, 2016, the National Executive Committee invited Kyaator to the national Secretariat Gboko with the intention to amicably monitor the development. Mr. Kyaator belatedly turned down the invitation saying that he saw no need obeying the National Executive Committee.

On the 5th of September, 2016, the National Executive Committee met again and this time ordered the suspension of Mr. Kyaator led Committee whereby he was appropriately communicated. Nevertheless, he went ahead and conducted an illegal election in contravention of Article 1(3) of the Constitution of Mdzough U Tiv, which its outcome was a nullity. Article 1 (3) reads, “This constitution shall have binding force on all persons, organisations and Association, who subscribe to it or have otherwise become members of the Association however, and accordingly any constitution of any other person, organization or Association been or becoming a member of Association which is inconsistent with any provision of this constitution, that other constitution shall, to the extent of the inconsistency be null and void”.

On the 28th of October, 2016, Mr. Kajo and co, who were the product of the illegal election came to the National Secretariat of Mdzough U Tiv in Gboko to lobby for ratification. He wrote a letter to President General, Chief Engr Edward Ujege MFR FNSE, captioned, “DECLARATION OF TOTAL SUBMISSION TO YOUR LEADERSHIP AND HEADSHIP OF MDZOUGH U TIV, WORDWIDE” which he signed with all his supporters. In the said meeting, the National Executive Committee informed him that he could not be the President of Lagos state chapter of Mdzough U Tiv because of two reasons,

  1. The Constitution of Mdzough U Tiv is based on the principle of “Ya Na Angbian” and he who is an Ipusu by decent cannot succeed the immediate past President, Mr. Kyaator who is also from Ipusu.

  2. Based on the suspension of the former President, Mr. kyaator, he had no powers to conduct election; hence all that he did was a nullity.

Mr. Kajo and company all agreed with our stand above, they took a commitment that they would go back and comply.

On the first of November, 2016, Mr. Kajo and company submitted their letter to the National Executive Committee and pleaded for pardon. The National Executive Commi

ttee advised that the Tiv principle of “Ya Na Angbian” (Chop Give Brother). Most be put in practice all the times. As such, since the last President Mr. kyaator was from Ipusu extraction, the next President most come from Ichongo. But Mr. Kajo is from Ipusu as well, so he can not be the succeeding President. Mr. Kajo now accepted to run for Deputy President and agreed to wait for his right time.

On the 12th November, 2016, a delegation led by Mr. Kajo’s faction and other stakeholders were invited to the national headquarters, Gboko to raise a common caretaker body to officiate till next election. They came and a five man Board of Trustee (BOT) care taker was formed to the agreement of all in attendance led by Chief Alfred Ubee. Subsequently, 18th March, 2017 was fixed for the Lagos state general election.

On the 18th and 19th March, 2017 the election and inauguration of the new Executive Committee of Mdzough U Tiv Lagos state chapter took place in Lagos, which produced Mr. Simeon Kwaghbo of Ichongo extraction as the President amongst other officials.

Despite the above paragraph, a petition was received on the 14th of May, 2017 that Mr. Kajo and group were still parading themselves as the Executive Committee of Lagos state chapter of Mdzough U Tiv.

On the 23rd of May, 2017, the National Executive Committee of Mdzough U Tiv once again met and restated that they were only working with Mr. Simeon Kwaghbo led Executive Committee and not Mr. Kajo and dissidents.

In summary, we wish to state that as custodians of the Constitution of Mdzough U Tiv, we must at all times comply with the principle of “Ya Na Angbian” when it comes to matters of election as it is enshrined in the Constitution of Mdzough u Tiv.

We must ensure discipline within the rank and file of the membership and chapters of Mdzough U Tiv.
