NANS ELECTION: Obande Gideon, Lukman Salahuddeen and others Key in to Chinonso Obasi’s Unity Convention

Text of Communique of the NANS Conciliatory Meeting held on Saturday 10th March, 2018 at the University of Abuja.

Great Nigerian Students,

Recall that the Chinonso Obasi led NANS leadership resolved for a Unity Convention where all aggrieved parties shall come together for a unified convention. This was contained in a statement issued by the President on 1st March, 2018 and published by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and many online social media platforms inviting all the parties legitimate within the NANS structure, including former President’s of the organization and reverred stakeholders.

The meeting was well attended by various invited stakeholders and meeting commenced by conciliatory remarks delivered by the SUG President of UNIABUJA ably represented by the Provost of the SUG.

Despite the matriculation ceremony going on simultaneously with the NANS CONCILIATORY MEETING in the institution, the meeting and the matriculation ceremony of the University of Abuja proceeded with peace and ended peacefully.

The convener of the meeting Comrade Chinonso Obasi, GCNS in his remarks urged for a united body, stressing that the organization can do a lot in attending to issues bordering on students welfare which is the primary responsibility of the leadership of NANS to Nigerian students if the body is one. He thanked everyone for their support and said his presence in NANS is on an open book, in everyone’s archive.
Comrade OBASI reiterated his call on the other side led by Comrade Aruna Kadiri to put the students interest at heart and embrace this legacy of organization before self initiative.

While thanking all the attendees, he urged aspirants to develop consolidatory strategies that will further take NANS forward. He promised to ensure a level playing ground for all aspirants and wished them a safe campaign and contest.

Speakers after speakers, particularly all the Presidential aspirants in attendance harped on the Unity of NANS and pledged their support and appreciation of the Unity Initiative of the Obasi leadership.

The meeting having resolved through robust deliberation on the inevitable Unity of NANS, in a motion moved by Comrade Friday Omadewu Adayi, a front line Presidential aspirant of the University of Abuja for the NANS Presidential seat urged legitimate Nigerian students to appeal to stakeholders particularly former NANS leaders to come together, champion and ensure the Unity of NANS. He was seconded by unanimous acceptance by voice vote of all attendees.

The meeting suggested that former National President of NANS 2007/2008 Comrade Yinka Dada, JP be appointed Chairman of the Conciliatory Committee with the mandate to meet with Chinonso Obasi, Aruna Kadiri, Zonal Coordinators, Stakeholders and selected Student Union Presidents’ within two weeks and harmonise a United Convention Planning Committee list that shall organise and conduct an election on any agreed venue and date accepted by all parties.
He requested attendees to affirm that the CPC members in the list must have current Matriculation numbers. This honour done on Mr. Yinka Dada as also in commemiration of his ten years of after active service (March 11, 2018 – March 11, 2018) in NANS.

The Meeting resolved in favour of all the motions.

The aspirants who were in attendance include Friday Omadewu(University of Abuja), Lukman Salahuddeen(Kwara State University), Berido Henry(Benue State Polytechnic), Adio Odunjo Orlando(University of Ilorin, Kwara State), Obande Gideon (who sent a text and aligned with the peace process), all Presidential aspirants Abubakar Gambo, an aspirant for office of the Senate President and numerous other aspirants for different offices all agreed that the Convention they shall all honor, attend and contest is a Unity Convention in the interest of Nigerian Students and for the upliftment of NANS.

NANS appealed to the Governing Council and Management of University of Abuja to revisit the injustice meted on the expelled 2007 SUG President of University of Abuja, Comrade Igwe Ude-Umanta since 2007, stating that 11years is a long time punishment and an unconditional waiver should be given to our comrade.

NANS also decry the state of poor infrastructural development at the University of Abuja, stating that the Institution is highly underfunded contrary to the National Unity image it ought to have as the only Federal University in the Federal Capital Territory.

The meeting lauded the Vice Chancellor Prof. Michael Umale Adikwu for his Students friendly relationship and his efforts at promoting a democratic Students’ Union Government in the University.

That the meeting resolved that any group opposing a Unity Convention shall be seen and treated as enemy of Nigerian Students and agents of destabilization.

That a vote of Confidence be passed on the Hon. Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN while appreciating his patriotic and unbiased resloves on issues of National development as evidenced in his recent recommendation to President Mohammadu Buhari on the OPL-245, which will boost our economy and create more jobs to the young ones.

That the meeting also advised the Minister of Power, Works and Housing Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN to ignore the Anti Students’ decisions of the Joint Committee of Power and Public Procurement in the National Assembly.

That the state of power supply in our Tertiary Institutions requires urgent attention and that the Energizing Education Program of the Federal Government be supported and inclusive of all categories of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.

That the great Nigerian students shall resist any form of opposition that may arise to jeopardize the Energizing Education Program.

That there should be continuous efforts at uniting NANS and declared support and solidarity for the process.

That Nigerian students should continue to contribute to nation building and support government favourable policies to ameliorate poverty and stop corruption.
