Darkness, sorrow and pain returned to Ogobia in Ugboju yesterday as some unknown gun men stormed the community at about 11pm on Saturday, killing four persons and leaving two other persons with gunshot wounds.

In a move which seems like a reprisal attack following the 14th September 2017 attacks which claimed the life of some prominent sons of Ugboju, including late Major Lawrence Ugboh, the gunmen, according to sources in the community who pleaded for anonymity, stormed the community and started shooting sporadically to register their presence, before heading to the particular house where the four persons where killed.

The Otukpo Local Government Chairman, Hon. Chief George Alli who immediately rushed to the scene of the incident this morning, condemned the attacks in strong terms. Alli said “this is wicked, barbaric, satanic and most regrettable”. He said at a time when families are preparing for Christmas celebration with loved ones, some are looking for a way to inflict pain on their fellow men.

The Council Boss got the injured moved to undisclosed hospital for treatment and immediately got His excellency, Governor Samuel Ortom’s approval for security to be beefed up in and around Ogobia. Two trucks of Joint Task Force which comprises of the Nigerian Police; Civil Defense and the Nigerian Army, are to be stationed at Ogobia until peace is fully restored.

Hon. Alli while consoling the bereaved, told them to “be assured that their relations death won’t be in vain”. He said, those who choose to visit others with pain will reap the rewards of their evil in full, no matter how long it takes”.

The Council Boss appealed to those who are aggrieved against reprisal attacks, but urged the people of the community to always avail the security agencies with information that could lead to the arrest of those behind the ugly incident, for them to face the law. He said it is their right to enjoy peace like every other communities in Otukpo, and everyone should close ranks and do their best to ensure that peace is enthroned permanently in every part of Ugboju.
