The importance of grassroots football cannot be overemphasized. Whether they are privately owned or sponsored by the government. Sports, particularly football, provides youths with the opportunity to be productively engaged and builds in them the mental discipline to stay off anti-social behaviour.Football also plays the vital role of helping people stay fit, healthy and strengthen their mental alertness.

This is why the awards winning Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government, Hon. Chief George Alli, in his continued support for grassroots football, donated Jerseys and full kits to Otukpo United FC on Monday, 13th November 2017.

Hon. Alli’s love for football which saw him partner with Barrister Paul Paul Ankwa Edeh, alongside some Nigerian ex-internationals including Peter Rufai, Emmanuel Babayaro, Garba Lawal as well as Kanu Nwankwo, who was unavoidably indisposed on the final day of the Captain Ankwa Edeh Annual Football Tournament which held at Jesus College football field, Otukpo in May, 2017 is solidly behind the successful Otukpo United FC who continues to dominate and defeat other opponents with wide score margin during friendly games as well as during tournament. This same team played a goalless draw with Nigerian Premiership Football Club, Lobi Stars of Makurdi in a recent friendly match involving the two team.

According to Alli, “Part of the gain of standing by these boys is to harvest youths who Or would have constituted a negative challenge to the society”. Alli further said, “in the end, it makes our streets safer”.

The Head Coach of the team, Coach John Enyi (Iron Bee) expressed his gratitude and thanked the chairman for his love and continued support for the team.

Football in Nigeria like in most countries of the world also provides employment opportunities for many. Many Nigerian footballers today are their families breadwinners. Sports generally and football, in particular, give young people the opportunity to meet new friends from different backgrounds, as well as travel to places they otherwise could not have been.
