BENUE: Gov Ortom Receives Arewa Consultative Forum, calls for dredging of river Benue.

Against the backdrop of growing agitations for restructuring across the country, Benue state Governor, Samuel Ortom has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the unity of Nigeria just as he called for the dredging of River Benue to avert future flooding of the state.

Governor Ortom who said the state has nothing against restructuring so long as it does not entail tearing the country apart spoke today while receiving a delegation of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi.

Represented by his deputy, Engr Benson Abounu, Governor Ortom stated that Benue state would only support restructuring that guarantees development of the country, adding that it identifies fully with the position of the North on unity of the country.

Governor Ortom who stressed the need for people of the North to come together and work to promote the development of the area as was done by the late Sarduana of Sokoto commended the ACF for its role in promoting unity and development in the country and for identifying with the people of the state at the time of its great need.

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his prompt response to the flooding in the state and explained that the massive devastation from the deluge results from the shallowness of the River Benue caused by silting.

He said the solution lies in the dredging of the River Benue and called on the ACF to help prevail on the federal government to bring this about and also help in the construction of needed drainages.

Earlier, the leader of the team and deputy chairman, ACF, Alhaji Musa Liman Kwande said they were in Makurdi to commiserate with the Government and people of the state over the unfortunate flood incident as well as the brutal murder of the late Principal Special Assistant to the Governor on Knowledge Economy and Investments, Dr. Tavershima Adyorough and to also present some relief materials to the victims of the flood.

He commended Governor Ortom for his admirable efforts in managing the challenges posed by the flood and called for the construction of drainages and adherence to warnings from meteorological agencies.

The Forum which gave kudos to donor agencies, civil society groups and public spirited individuals that came to the assistance of the state presented several bags of rice to the Flood Relief Committee.
